Warning: Contains Moving Parts

READ : Mark 1:16-20

And Jesus said to them, “Follow me and I will make you fish for people.” (v. 17)

My anxiety level escalates just before we pull onto the road. Will I be able to keep up with them? Will I get left behind at a traffic light? Will they change lanes so many times that I lose them?

This mild sense of panic ensues whenever someone says to me, “Oh, don’t worry about directions. You can just follow me there.” It sounds so easy, but somehow it always requires more focus and persistence than I anticipate. I’ve got to be ready to move!

When Jesus invited the disciples to follow him, I doubt that he expected them to settle into a comfy recliner, kick up the footrest, and proclaim, “Keep on preaching, Jesus. I agree with everything you’ve said.” But I find that many days I kick up my spiritual footrest and behave as though surrounding myself with words about Jesus is the same as following him.

Hebrews 4:12 reminds us that the truth of Jesus found in God’s Word is “living and active.” The truth is on the move, requiring me to do more than cheer from the bleachers. To live in the truth, I need to get up and get going! After my time of reflecting on God’s truth today, where and how will I move to follow it?

Lord, make me active to follow your truth today!
