After the Cross

Dave Gifford

READ : Luke 24:36-52

Jesus … stood among them and said to them,“Peace be with you.” (v. 36, NIV)

The cross of Jesus Christ, as infinitely important as it is, is not the end of the story. As a missionary in Latin America I often have seen gruesome crucifixes in which Jesus’ body was covered with blood, his features contorted in hideous agony. The legitimate need to fix our eyes upon Jesus and remember the cross can be twisted into a morbid fascination with the pain of Jesus’ sufferings. People sometimes think of Jesus as if he were still dead, completely powerless to help them.

The cross is central to our faith and salvation but it isn’t the whole story. We must add to it the best news of all: Jesus is alive! He rose from the dead and now rules from heaven. The cross is incomplete without the resurrection. We must not view Christ as a perpetually helpless victim. He is our victorious risen Savior, as the Bible foretold he would be. Because he lives and reigns, we can look to him each day for strength and direction. Good news like this isn’t just for us to keep to ourselves. It is meant to be passed on. Tell someone today that Jesus is alive!

Risen Lord, I’m so glad you are alive. I can’t wait to see you face to face.
