READ : Romans 1:1-7
The gospel . . . which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy scriptures. (vv. 1-2)
Before I left for the week, I promised my five-year-old I would have something for her when I returned home. But the conference I was attending was busier than I had expected, and finding a store with children’s gifts slipped my mind. I came home to a deeply disappointed little girl.
Broken promises: we are all guilty of them at times. And whenever we fail to keep our word, even accidentally, we leave behind hurt people. We may not intend to, but we do.
What a contrast is our eternal God! From the time of Adam and Eve’s fall to the end of the Old Testament, God had made numerous promises through the prophets regarding a coming Savior and Messiah, and he fulfilled every one of them without fail in the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
We cannot imagine keeping every promise we have ever made. But God is one hundred percent faithful, and “every one of God’s promises is a ‘Yes’” in Christ (2 Corinthians 1:20). He is a true promise keeper. And he continues to keep all his promises about his abundant love and care for us. You can depend on it—and on him!
Thank you, Lord, for all your promises. I praise you that you keep every one of them. Amen.
