READ : Romans 1:16-17
I am not ashamed of the gospel; it is the power of God for salvation. (v. 16)
I was in my late teens and doing summer work on a farm. The Lord presented me with a perfect opportunity to witness for him, and I blew it. Another worker—a rough and tumble guy—said to me, “You don’t smoke, you don’t drink, you don’t run around with women; just what do you get out of life?” I hemmed and hawed, but essentially said nothing.
I knew the right answer, of course; I was a professing Christian. My purpose in life came not through indulging the temptations of the flesh but through a relationship with Jesus. Yet for some reason, I felt too ashamed or scared to offer this man the different perspective on life that the gospel offers.
That was never a problem for the apostle Paul. As he here lays out his plans to the Roman Christians, he states forthrightly that he is not ashamed of the Christian message because it is the power of God to save all who believe it. Paul never lost an opportunity to tell others about God’s saving grace available through Jesus Christ. May the Lord give all of us the desire and ability to witness for him.
Lord, enable me to bear witness with my words and my life to the gospel’s power to save. Amen.
