Covenant Advantages

READ : Romans 3:1-8

What advantage has the Jew? . . . in the first place the Jews were entrusted with the oracles of God. (vv. 1-2)

Paul is ready to wrap up his discussion of the universality of human sin. If both Jews and Gentiles are sinners, is there any advantage to belonging to the people of God? Or, to put it in our terms, does it matter whether you were raised in a God-fearing home? If you have been born into a Christian family, does it make any difference?

Well, yes! Even if you do not always live the truth, at least you know the truth. You have been exposed to the Bible (“the oracles of God”) as God’s Word. You know that eternal salvation comes from confessing the name of Jesus as Savior and Lord. And you know the value of prayer.

It’s what you do with that information that makes the difference. It’s like sitting in a room filled with sumptuous food. You can choose to eat, or you can decide to starve yourself. But what an advantage you have over those who don’t even know where the food is!

So take up that Bible and read it. Make your own personal commitment to Jesus. Then point others to where they too can find the gift of eternal life.

I thank you, God, for the many privileges I have. May I never take them for granted. Amen.
