READ : Mark 11:22-24
Whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. (v. 24)
What happens when we ask, and believe, yet we do not receive? What then?
As for me, I intend to keep praying. I will concede that sometimes it becomes obvious that our prayer is not going to be answered as we had hoped. The pregnancy you long for is not going to occur. The cancer in your body is not going to go away. The marriage you pray for ends in bitterness and divorce. There are times when God makes it clear that what we pray for is not going to happen.
But until God makes that clear, I will keep praying. I will keep resisting circumstances that I think are at odds with God’s perfect will for my life. I will not submit to misery and affliction as though they represented God’s grand plan for my existence.
Sometimes our prayers are answered in wonderful ways. The mountains that block our health and happiness are lifted up and thrown into the sea. And sometimes not. But in any event, I will keep praying. Unanswered prayer is a dark mystery. But in the center of the darkness shines the luminous confidence of Jesus in prayer: “Whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”
Increase my faith, O God.
