READ : Proverbs 8:22-31
I was appointed from eternity, from the beginning, before the world began. (Proverbs 8:23, NIV)
In Psalm 104 we are told that the Lord made all his works “in wisdom.” Here we get a vivid picture of that process. In Proverbs 8 wisdom is personified as a woman, and in these verses she describes her place at the very beginning of creation. Before all other things were made, wisdom was present—the first born of the Lord’s creation. More than just being there as a passive bystander, wisdom was an active part of God’s creative process. Verse 30 says she was “the craftsman at his side.”
Being made in God’s image includes the ability to create things. Just as wisdom was central to the divine creative work, it must be part of our creative efforts as well. All of Proverbs 8 exhorts us to seek and find wisdom. That is also true in our creative works—music, architecture, literature, science, art. David Clowney’s hymn puts it this way:
Clearer still we see Thy hand in Man whom Thou hast made for Thee;
Ruler of creation’s glory, image of Thy Majesty.
Music, art, the fruitful garden, all the labor of his days
Are the calling of his Maker to the harvest feast of praise.
Thank you, Lord, for giving us the desire and ability to create things. May your wisdom guide all my creative efforts today.
