It Isn't Heaven Yet

READ : Romans 8:19-25

We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. (Romans 8:22, NIV)

I live along the northern shore of Lake Huron, in a place that many people describe as heaven on earth. It is spectacularly beautiful, as are many other places in this world, but Romans 8 reminds us that the creation isn’t heaven. The black flies and mosquitoes of summer and the sub-zero weather in winter are good reminders of that fact around here! It’s not a perfect place, despite its appeal to tourists and summer visitors.

As beautiful as so much of creation is, it is still a fallen, sin-wracked world. The apostle Paul reminds us that the whole creation is groaning to be liberated from its bondage to decay and restored to its perfect, original order. We, too, await that transformation and can identify with the frustration of not being all we can and should be.

What will this redeemed creation look like? We know that it will not include death and decay. There are other descriptions in Scripture that give us a hint of what it will be. If the corrupted world amazes us with its beauty, we can be confident that the redeemed one will be even better.

Father, I love the world you have made and thank you that the best is yet to come.
