A River of Life

READ : Revelation 22:1-5

No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him. (Revelation 22:3, NIV)

Here we see another picture of the new creation, centering on the city of God and the river that runs through it—a river clearer and cleaner than the most pristine trout stream. Next to the river is a tree that gives fruit each month of the year and brings healing to the nations. What a plant geneticist would give to develop a tree like that! This description takes us back to Eden (Genesis 2), with its tree of life and rivers watering the garden. It seems that paradise restored is part of God’s plan for the redemption of his creation. The curse—by which all of creation is subjected to frustration and decay—will be gone, swallowed up in the cosmic victory won by Christ.

The city of God is also a city without night, where no light or sun is needed because the Lord himself will give light. Winter nights are long here in the north, and winter days tend to be cloudy. We often go days and weeks without seeing the sun. Living with the endless light of God sounds amazing! But we can’t begin to imagine how glorious it will actually be. —Mike Vaal
