READ : Romans 6:1-2a
What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! (NIV)
In Romans 1-5, Paul has shown that sin permeates the entire human race and leaves every person speechless and accountable before God’s just judgment (Romans 3:19-20). But we also learn here that God has devised a plan to answer this problem. That plan began with Adam, was worked out through Abraham and his descendants, and reached its climax in Jesus Christ, God’s gift of love to the human race. Through his sacrifice on the cross, we now have peace, hope, and joy.
This is all theology, and it can sometimes seem terribly abstract. Even Satan and his demons know these teachings are true (see James 2:19). Does it really make a difference in my life to believe these doctrines?
Absolutely! If you really internalize the fact that God loves you as a sinner—so much that he died for you—and that the free gift of salvation is yours by faith, you will ask: “How can I thank God for all his blessings?” The answer to that question is clear: I will serve him with a loving heart and try to keep my life free from sin.
God, enable me to live a life of loving service to you and not to offend you by disobeying your law. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
