READ : Malachi 3:18-4:3
The sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings. (v. 2, NIV)
“Take heart. You will be vindicated” is another word of grace to God’s people. The entire Bible works from the assumption that God is for the righteous and against the wicked. There are sheep and goats, wheat and tares. God will make a distinction between those who serve him and those who do not.
He says to the wicked: “Surely the day is coming; it will burn like a furnace . . . every evildoer will be stubble . . . Not a root or a branch will be left to them” (4:1, NIV).
“But for you who revere my name . . . “ That little word but ought to be sweet to us. It marks good news for the remnant. Instead of fire and destruction, a sun of righteousness will rise, dripping healing in its streaming rays. The righteous will be vindicated. Their faithfulness will be honored.
One of my favorite parts in the Lord of the Rings trilogy is the battle at Helm’s Deep. The whole land lies in darkness, under the shadow of death. But just when evil is about to triumph, a light shines. “There suddenly upon a ridge appeared a rider . . . shining in the rising sun . . . ‘Behold, the White Rider! Gandalf is come again!’” Gandalf’s coming was good news for the faithful of Middle Earth. Christ’s coming will be great news for the righteous of our earth.
Come quickly, Lord Jesus. Amen.
