Shadowing God

READ : Galatians 5:16-26

Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. (v. 25, niv)

I had the privilege of serving once as an intern in the U.S. House of Representatives. Most of my duties were fairly mundane, like answering phones and running errands. However, I also had the occasional honor of “shadowing” the congressman as he performed his duties. Shadowing allowed me to follow him to meetings, votes, media events, and fund-raisers. Just being close to the congressman and all of the associated action was very exciting.

God wants us to “shadow” his Spirit. We strive to be in his presence as we commit to a life of worship. We also discern where God is working and seek to join him in that work. In this passage Paul reminds us that we “live by the Spirit.” We need the sustaining power of God’s Spirit to enable us to survive in a sinful world. But if we live by the Spirit, we must also walk by the Spirit, step by step.

Shadowing God is rarely glamorous. He will lead us into some dark places, to offer hope and love to the world’s least loveable. Yet it is our greatest honor to keep in step with the Spirit of God in mission to a lost and broken world. As Paul reminds us, living such a life produces great fruit.

Lord, fill us with a desire to keep in step with you. Amen.
