His Unsearchable Judgments

Verlyn Verbrugge

READ : Romans 11:33-36

How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! (v. 33)

Everything is searchable today, right? Just go to Google.com and type in a word. Even God is searchable: type “God” in the Google search bar and in one-tenth of a second you get 573 million locations to search out God!

Would Paul today write: “How searchable are his judgments”? Absolutely not, for simply searching does not mean understanding. Regardless of how many websites we go to, we will never fully understand God and his ways.

In Romans 9-11 Paul has been struggling to grasp God’s plan of salvation for the Jews. While he has come to some conclusions, he knows that he has still not fully understood God and his ultimate plan of redemption, for God is more than the human mind can understand.

And that’s OK! God is far, far greater than I am. Who can understand infinity? Who can understand the Trinity? Who can understand the doctrine of election? Who can really understand God’s love for a sinful, rebellious human race? These are mysteries of “the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God.” Before such teachings the best thing we can do is to stand in awe and to praise his holy name.

Dear God, from you and through you and unto you are all things. To you be the glory forever. Amen.
