READ : Genesis 37:12-34

They said to one another, “Here comes this dreamer. Come now, let us kill him.”(vv. 19-20)

As the story of Joseph continues, we see that the brothers’ jealousy has now turned to hatred. They dislike their little brother so much that they want him dead. But how could they tell their father such a thing? They add deceit to an ever-growing list of sins and hatch a scheme to make it look like some wild animal killed Joseph. At the last minute, they decide they might as well make some money off Joseph, so they sell him into slavery.

One of the worst cases of hatred I have ever come across was found in a certain man’s will. So angry was this man that he left each of his daughters the sum of one dollar. He spelled out his wish that their lives be fraught with misery, unhappiness, and sorrow and that their deaths “be soon and of a lingering, malignant, and torturous nature.” The will ended with the line: “May their souls rest in hell and suffer the torments of the condemned for eternity.” Nothing is worse than a family infected by the cancer of hate.

Hatred can cause such damage. Is there someone, perhaps very close to you, you need to stop hating today?

Lord, help me love others like you love me. Amen.
