READ : Genesis 42:1-28

At this they lost heart and turned trembling to one another, saying, “What is this that God has done to us?” (v. 28)

What a confusing experience for the brothers of Joseph! Here they are, minding their own business, trying to get food for the family back in Canaan, and all they get is a big hassle from some hot-shot administrator in Egypt. He singles them out and accuses them of spying and lying to him. And then he demands that they bring their youngest brother to Egypt.

The brothers must have thought, “Why is all this happening? What have we done to be treated like this? We haven’t done anything wrong.” But then they remember what had happened years earlier. Were they paying for their sins of the past when they sold their brother Joseph into slavery? The brothers are plagued with guilt and remorse. And then, just as they were leaving Egypt they discovered that their money had been returned to them. What was going on?

Have you ever felt confused by events in your life? One of my favorite Scripture verses is Romans 8:28, “We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.” We may be confused, but God is not. He knows what he is doing. Trust God to work things out.

Lord, I believe. Help my unbelief. Amen.
