God Declares His Judgment

Geoffrey Cox

READ : Daniel 5:24-30

“You have been weighed on the scales and found wanting.” (v. 27)

The handwriting on Belshazzar’s wall could be translated this way: “numbered, numbered, weighed, divided.” There in four prophetic words is God’s judgment on a once-mighty empire, its end only a few short hours away.

Numbered, that is, checked in detail, like the soldier’s kit-check, and something is found missing. What does God check in each of us? A body with all its parts and abilities; a soul, personal and individual and invited to an eternal relationship with God. Jesus said, “What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?” (Mark 8:36, niv).

Weighed. Belshazzar was weighed in the balance and found wanting. Jesus looked at a coin with Caesar’s image and said, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.” What if God’s image is so defaced in us that we are weighed and found wanting, like a clipped coin?

And so Belshazzar’s kingdom is divided, broken up, and shared out. With no sign of repentance in Belshazzar, judgment falls, and far quicker than any expected.

Make sure God does not find you wanting, and decide to take from you what little you have and give it to others (see Matthew 25:28-30).

Lord, let me use what you have given so that I may be ready to render an account.
