READ : Genesis 12:1-5
“. . . and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” (v. 3, niv)
We watched as our son Dan and his wife Carol walked through the long tunnel to a Delta jumbo jet en route for missionary service in Japan. Lumps filled our throats and tears welled up as we saw Carol with a baby girl on one hip and her sister in tow. Little Joel was holding his dad’s hand, and the “big boys” of seven and nine helped carry the bags.
How sad to see them move 10,000 miles away. The loss was hard to bear—especially when I saw the pain on my wife’s face. She said, “It’s okay, honey. That’s what we raised them for—not to hold on to them but to give them to God.”
And then it dawned on me. Isn’t this what the covenant is all about?—that “all peoples on earth will be blessed through you” (v. 3). It was a sweet sorrow knowing that the very purpose of God was being unfolded before our eyes.
Now, 20 years later, the Japan mission has grown tremendously. There are nine children in Dan and Carol’s family and all have made a profession of faith and want to serve the Lord in some way, whether through business, nursing, teaching, or preaching.
God promised Abraham that through him all nations would be blessed. We are the means of conveying that blessing—what a privilege!
Thank you, Father, for the eternal covenant. Let it reach the ends of the earth through us.
