(The Lord promised Jacob): “I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” (28:15, niv)

Our van couldn’t seem to pass the miles fast enough as we traveled back to California. I was exhausted from our four-week, fun-packed, cross-country vacation. As much as I enjoyed the trip, I longed to be back home.

At Bethel, the Lord promised Jacob that he would be with him wherever he would go and would bring him back to his homeland. His faith in that promise sustained him during the years he spent in Egypt escaping the famine. However, God’s promise to bring Jacob back to his home was never fulfilled during his lifetime. It was not until after Jacob’s death that his sons buried him in the land of Canaan.

Once we accept Jesus Christ as Lord, we are assured that he will keep his promises. Just as with Jacob, he promises to never leave us (John 14:18). And when death comes, the Lord will bring us home to be with him (John 14:3). Jacob’s faith remained strong even unto death. We also can live in faith – faith that someday we will be home with our Lord.

Lord, help our faith to remain strong as we trust in your promises.
