Faith to Keep Marching

Steven Laman

READ : Joshua 6:1-21

God’s people had faith, and when they had walked around the city of Jericho for seven days, its walls fell down. (Hebrews 11:30, cev)

As a kid, I pulled some dumb stunts. One of the stupidest was when I slid a metal colander stand over my head and it got stuck around my neck. I looked quite foolish until Dad cut the frame and freed me from my metal cage.

The Israelites must have looked incredibly foolish as they stomped around Jericho day after day. Jericho’s inhabitants might even have ridiculed them for following God’s seemingly ludicrous battle strategy. After a week of faithful obedience, God caused the walls to crumble and fall.

To some, following the commands of God seems just as foolish as marching around and shouting at a big stone wall. They feel that God’s strategies for living are irrelevant and outdated. But God’s laws never go out of style.

Like the Israelites, we need the faith to keep on doing what God says. God’s people were not disappointed that they decided to follow the Lord’s orders, and we won’t be either. Obeying the Lord’s commands is the only sure way to live in right relationship with him and others. Let’s trust that God knows what he’s doing when he tells us how to live!

Lord, thank you for your instruction book for living. Help us to follow it.
