Hope for the Hopeless

John Koedyker

READ : Micah 2:12-13

I will surely gather all of you, O Jacob; I will surely bring together the remnant of Israel. (v. 12, niv)

In these verses we see an abrupt change in Micah’s message. Till now we have only heard words of judgment and condemnation. Judah will be destroyed and its people punished for their disobedience. But disaster is not the last word. God will be merciful. God will deliver his people. He will gather a remnant together and preserve his people like a flock.

It is interesting to read what the various commentators say about these verses. Some Old Testament scholars doubt their authenticity. They speculate that these verses must have been added later or inserted by an editor in the wrong place. Even John Calvin says, “I see not how the prophet could pass so suddenly into a different strain.”

On the other hand, isn’t this just like God? When things are going bad, when there seems to be no hope, God comes to the rescue. Moses had his back to the Red Sea and the armies of Pharaoh in hot pursuit. But God opened a way through the sea and saved his people. Jesus was dead and in the tomb and God raised him. With God there is always hope. So, don’t despair. God has a plan to save you, too.

Lord, help me never lose hope in you. Amen.
