READ : Ephesians 1:19-23
So that . . . you may know . . . the immeasurable greatness of his power. (vv. 18-19)
Life is full of stories about people looking for power over others, power that is quickly gained and just as quickly lost. Paul wants us to understand real power, and live in that. The prophet Elisha once prayed for his worried servant, “O Lord . . . open his eyes that he may see” (2 Kings 6:17). God answered that prayer by showing that frightened man his powerful angel hosts.
Paul is praying something similar for us. “God raised Jesus” was the center of Paul’s message. If you really want to see God’s power, Paul argues, look at the risen and reigning Lord Jesus. Since God raised Jesus with such power to such a height of glory and majesty, so he will as certainly raise us who believe in Christ, and we shall reign with him.
For now soak your soul in a vision of the majesty and glory of Jesus (vv. 20-23), “far above all rule and authority” and “head over all things for the church”—which is us!
Gaze at Jesus. Wonder at God’s power displayed in him and for him. Think what power it took to raise Jesus from death to life and then to exalt him with power on high. That same power is ours! Bow before him in worship.
Lord Jesus, you are above all rule and authority. Worthy is the Lamb!
