READ : James 5:13-17
The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective. (v. 16)
The campus of the seminary is nestled against the mountainside, overlooking beautiful Carp Lake. It is spring. All of God’s creation has come to life after a long winter’s sleep. Then we realized that many newly-awakened poisonous snakes had swum across the lake and now were invading the campus. Precautions were taken: carrying flashlights, making loud noise, and checking behind doors, especially at night.
Joseph had gone to practice the chapel organ, but soon the quietness of evening was shattered by his piercing scream. As he had pressed down on one of the foot pedals with his bare feet, unknowingly he had also pushed down on a sleeping snake who had curled up under the pedal. As he pushed down, the snake’s head went up, biting him on the ankle. Naturally, as Joseph screamed, the snake disappeared.
Joseph was rushed to the hospital and given an injection. Many prayed. Nothing happened. Doctors were consulted and tried an alternate type of anti-venom. Finally, after hours of waiting and praying, there was a small sign of improvement. He would live!
What a reminder of the power of prayer! God heard and answered even when Joseph had been a bit careless.
Almighty God, we thank you that you answer our prayers even when we take matters into our own hands. Amen.
