READ : Colossians 3:12-17
. . . with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. (v. 16)
We have a piece of paper lying on a table in the entranceway to our house, placed with the hope that those who enter our home will read it. On it is written, “Grace and gratitude belong together like heaven and earth.”
This paper, given to me by a wise retired professor and missionary, inspires me to remember the intimate connections between grace and gratitude. Throughout the Bible we’re called to be thankful. In today’s passage from Colossians, for example, we’re reminded that we are God’s chosen people, holy and beloved by God, that we’re forgiven by God and that the peace of Christ rules in our hearts. These are amazing gifts of God’s grace. How can we possibly respond? By being thankful; by singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God with gratitude in our hearts; by “doing everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him” (v. 17).
In these coming days we will explore what it means to have gratitude in our hearts. As we read biblical passages related to giving thanks, I hope that we’ll come closer to understanding what it means that grace and gratitude belong together like heaven and earth.
Lord, help us to have gratitude in our hearts as we respond to your grace.
