READ : Psalm 136
O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever. (v. 1)
A few years ago I had the chance to hear a talk given by a thoughtful priest whose writings I had long admired. He spoke about how hard it is to remember God’s love for us in the midst of our daily lives. He encouraged us to practice reciting a Bible verse or phrase to ourselves all throughout the day that could help us remember God’s love and presence in our lives. The discipline of repetition, he said, would help us to really believe what Scripture says.
We see this discipline of repetition in Psalm 136. A phrase in the first verse of the psalm becomes its refrain: “for his steadfast love endures forever.” We’re reminded that God created the world out of his enduring love, brought Israel out of slavery because of his enduring love, guided his people through the wilderness because of his enduring love. As we pray today we also thank God for the gifts of his Son and Spirit, given to us because of his enduring love. And as we wait for Christ’s return, we continue to “give thanks to the God of heaven, for his steadfast love endures forever” (v. 26).
Lord, help us to repeat, remember, and believe that your love endures forever.
