Getting My Feet Wet

Joanna Fullner

READ : Joshua 3:11-17

Yet as soon as the priests who carried the ark reached the Jordan and their feet touched the water’s edge, the water from upstream stopped flowing. (vv. 15-16, NIV)

After raising our five children, my husband and I felt God was calling us to teach English in China. “Why China?” I asked. “How will our grown children cope without us? What if we get sick? What if Rich’s elderly parents fall ill?” I filled my mind with worries and fears.

Then God spoke to me in this story. I felt he was saying to me, “Step out in faith—into the water. Across the ocean lie many blessings, too many to count. Trust me. Get your feet wet! Go to China!” And so we did.

We stayed for two years, teaching English in a university in the central part of China. These were two of the best years of our lives, filled with new discoveries about ourselves and God, great adventures, and wonderful friendships with the people of China. We were able to share the Good News with many people, some of whom became believers. I often think what I would have missed if I had not stepped into the water and trusted the faithfulness of God.

Dear Lord, thank you for your faithfulness to us and to believers in the great country of China. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
