A Good Deed Forgotten

Cast your bread upon the waters, for after many days you will find it again. (Ecclesiastes 11:1, NIV)

Going to the post office in China was always an adventure. We were thrilled to receive any mail, and getting a parcel was even more exciting. One day I received a small package from a woman in our church back home. It was a tape of Christian music that I had made 10 years earlier for her mother, who was then living in a nursing home.

I used to visit my friend’s mother, talking with her and reading favorite Bible verses, but I did not remember making the tape. How interesting life is! My friend said that she found the tape after her mother died and thought I might like to have it in China.

As I played the familiar hymns on my small tape recorder, I was refreshed in spirit. Listening to Christian music was like drinking fresh, cold water in the middle of a dry, hot desert. This was one of our favorite activities while in China. A forgotten act of kindness years before came back to bless me. I felt God’s presence very near and thanked him for renewing my spirit in this unexpected way.

Thank you, Lord, for surprising us with times of refreshing just when we need it the most. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
