READ : Ephesians 2:4-10
For it is by grace you have been saved through faith . . . (v. 8, NIV)
One evening a young teacher friend of ours invited us to visit his room. It was in a gray three-story building that housed the single men teachers. His small room contained an iron cot, a desk, a table, and two chairs—no closet, no dresser, no heat. The men all shared a common bathroom. Hot showers could be enjoyed about a block away. We were surprised at the starkness of his living quarters, but he seemed content.
He wanted us to see a recent purchase he had made—a beautiful stereo set with six music tapes. It was something he had yearned to buy for a long time. The stereo cost this man one month’s salary, so it took some time to acquire it.
As he played a tape for us, he said, “Perhaps you might know one of the songs.” It was “Amazing Grace.” We humbly sat on the hard chairs and listened to this beautiful music flow through the cold, dreary room. We felt we were on holy ground despite the grimness of the surroundings. Our prayer was that this teacher would truly experience God’s amazing grace in his own life. A few months later, that is exactly what happened!
O Lord, bless this young teacher and help him always feel your grace in his life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
