I Believe in God

READ : Genesis 1

In the beginning . . . God . . . (Genesis 1:1)

Genesis begins where the Apostles’ Creed and all of life itself begins: with God. We must get this one thing straight right from the beginning. Every true thing we can know about God comes to us because of God’s gracious capacity and unrelenting desire to make himself known to his children. The Christian faith is not socially constructed but rather graciously revealed. When Christians confess what they believe, they are not making the first move. “In the beginning God . . .”

I once heard the great British evangelical leader John Stott say that if you could expunge from the world every semblance of Buddhism or one of the world’s other natural religions, each would return within a generation. Why? Because these religions function in a way that is reasonable to the culture that produced them. But if Christianity were to be expunged from the face of the earth it would never return. Why? Because the faith we confess is not our own; it has been revealed and not contrived. We must get this one thing straight right from the beginning. Every true thing we can know about God comes to us because of God’s gracious capacity and unrelenting desire to make himself known to his children. “In the beginning God . . .”

PRAYER

We bless you, living God, for making the first move, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
