Holy Spirit Conceived

READ : Luke 1:26-38

“The Holy Spirit will come upon you . . .” (v. 35)

Jesus Christ’s conception by the power of the Holy Spirit points squarely to his true nature as fully God and fully man. If Jesus Christ were merely human he could not save us. If Jesus Christ were merely God he would not save us. Since Jesus Christ is both God and man at the same time he could save us, and he did. Praise God from whom all blessings flow!

The story of the Annunciation especially underlines the remarkable presence of the triune God in this story. In a span of 13 verses God the Father commissions an angel to appear before the Virgin Mary. God the Holy Spirit is promised to her as the progenitor of the Son she would bear. Jesus Christ is that Son. While the term trinity does not appear in the Bible, it is everywhere assumed in the Bible. The great theologian Augustine of Hippo once wrote concerning the Trinity,

In the Father there is unity, in the Son equality, and in the Holy Spirit a harmony of unity and equality. And the three are all one because of the Father, all equal because of the Son, and all in harmony because of the Holy Spirit.

And this is the true nature of the great God whom we worship.

Praise to you Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.
