READ : Hebrews 9:11-28
. . . in the presence of God on our behalf. (v. 24)
Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, was exalted to the right hand of the Father, and he remains there to this day on our behalf. I find this to be an absolutely staggering truth. Even as I write this devotional and you read it, Jesus Christ is “in the presence of God on our behalf”! He is our advocate there.
A few years ago Ben Patterson, former Dean of the Chapel at Hope College, spoke to a gathering of more than a thousand students some of the most wonderful words I have ever heard in a sermon. He said to them, “When the devil assaults you with his venomous accusations about your failures as a Christian, do not argue with him. He has good evidence and is probably right. Just say to him, ‘What you are saying to me is irrelevant. I have been washed in the blood of the Lamb and I have an advocate before the Father right now!’”
This was wonderful advice for college students to hear then and equally wonderful advice for us now. When we stand together on the Lord’s Day to say in the Apostles’ Creed, “[He] is seated at the right hand of the Father . . . “ we are reminding ourselves again and again, “He is there for us!”
Blessed Advocate before the throne, thank you. Amen.
