Found Out

READ : Jonah 1:4-7

They cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah. (v. 7 NIV)

When we were little kids, my mother taught my sister, brother, and me that we should always tell the truth and do what is right. Her warning to us if we didn’t do that came in these words: “Your sins will find you out!” I can’t tell you how many times I discovered her to be right about that. My mother, on this point, was a better prophet than Jonah.

Jonah had disobeyed God. That was wrong and he knew it. Jonah was supposed to go to Nineveh (in present-day Iraq) and proclaim the word of the Lord to the people there. But he refused. He couldn’t care less about those foreigners. So he took off in the opposite direction and hid on a ship going to Tarshish, or Spain.

But Jonah could not run from God. God sent a violent storm and the ship started to sink. The sailors found Jonah sleeping below deck and told him to pray to his God. But what they really wanted to know was, “Whose fault is this?” So they cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah. His sins had found him out.

Lord, it’s foolish to try to hide our sins from you. You know it all. Thank you for providing a Savior who forgives us. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
