The Lord Will Provide

But the Lord provided a large fish to swallow up Jonah . . . (v. 17)

I often hear well-meaning people say to someone who is troubled, “Don’t worry. It’ll all work out.” That’s a kind of secular version of hope, without bringing God into the picture. But I must admit that this statement is often true. We do worry a lot more than we need to, and most of our greatest fears never materialize.

In Jonah’s case, things all worked out okay too. But not without God’s intervention. Verse 17 says, “But the Lord provided a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was inside the fish three days and three nights.”

It is interesting that Matthew in the New Testament makes reference to this event (Matthew 12:39-40). Besides the obvious three days and three nights parallel with Jesus in the tomb, Matthew is emphasizing to us the dramatic nature of God’s salvation. Jonah faced certain death, and so did Jesus. But God provided a way out.

God always provides a way out—for you and me too. Never lose faith. Never think that it’s over. As my wise and godly grandfather always said, “The Lord will provide.” It may not be through a big fish, but don’t be surprised when he does.

Lord, provide a way for me today in the difficulties I face. Thank you for the great provision of your Son for my sins. Amen.
