READ : Jonah 2:6b-10
Then the Lord spoke to the fish, and it spewed Jonah out upon the dry land. (v. 10)
When I first went to Japan as a missionary, I remember how far away from home it seemed—and it was! But I also remember looking up in the sky one night and realizing that I could see the same constellations in Kyoto that I could in Chicago. This is God’s world, and he is everywhere. Even deep down under the sea, and deep within the belly of a whale, God was there. Jonah knew this and did not hesitate to pray.
There is no place where God cannot hear us. Some places might seem unlikely—a bar, a prison, a red-light district. But as Christian ministries can attest, God is in those places too.
Recently I went to visit a dying friend at a hospice facility. It was a wonderful visit, but my friend, who was in a weakened state, often spoke in a whisper and I could not always understand him. As the visit came to an end, I offered a short prayer of thanks and asked for God’s help. But after I said “Amen,” my friend shocked me as he began to pray with tremendous strength and fervor. His voice was strongest when he prayed. God was there. God is everywhere!
Father, thank you for always being with us—everywhere. Amen.
