He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” (v. 5 NIV)
I’m intrigued by television shows that document the restoration of run-down houses. Investors see potential in these old, bug-infested houses that smell and have overgrown weeds and bushes all around them. They purchase a house and work tirelessly to restore it, replacing the floors, renovating the living spaces, redecorating everywhere. At the end of the show, the results are incredible.
Nehemiah’s was a story of restoration, and God is still in the restoration business today. He sees something in us—and in others—that we often miss. He sent his only Son to purchase us with his blood and dwell with us. Like Nehemiah, God did not labor from a distance but he led by his own example. Because of this we celebrate what will one day be a masterpiece of the Savior—completely renovated lives!
Nehemiah’s work in Jerusalem was nothing short of miraculous. Yet, the same God who used him to rebuild the wall in 52 days and recapture the hearts of his people is still at work today. Knowing this gives us the assurance we need, especially when we feel like we’re going nowhere fast. Praise God for his faithfulness to finish what he starts!
Father, thank you for being in the restoration business. Finish your new work in me.
