Worship with the Christian Community

READ : Hebrews 10:19-25

Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing. (v. 25 NIV)

Have you ever enjoyed playing a team sport such as soccer, football, or baseball? Team sports provide opportunities for different kinds of people to work together for a common goal. Each person on the team matters and everyone has a role to carry out.

I suppose it’s possible to play a team sport alone. You could throw a popup into the air and stand under it and catch it. Or you could kick a football and then run after it. But that would hardly be playing the game.

Trying to be a Christian without belonging to a local Christian community is like playing catch with yourself. The author of Hebrews 10 makes it clear that although some are in the habit of avoiding community worship, “we should not give up meeting together.”

Worshiping with others, whenever possible, allows us to join our hearts, voices, gifts, and prayers together as we encourage one another and share in Christian fellowship. This kind of community worship on earth is a foretaste of how saints will gather before the throne in heaven and join with others to worship the Lord. Are you an active part of a worshiping Christian community?

Father, thank you for opportunities to meet together for worship. Amen.
