READ : Luke 7:36-50
“ . . . he canceled the debts for both. . . . Therefore, I tell you, her sins, which were many, have been forgiven.” (vv. 42, 47)
Marcia was in deep trouble. She had made some foolish choices with her limited income, and she was over her head in debt. Not a day went by that she did not have some credit card or utility company call and ask for money. She dreaded answering the phone whenever it rang.
One day her parents stopped by and Marcia burst into tears. Through her sobs she admitted her foolishness and how she felt strangled by all her debts. Her father then asked for every one of her bills: “I will pay all of these off for you, and we want you to go for budget counseling.” Marcia could hardly believe her ears: for the first time in months, debt free! Her sobs changed to tears of joy.
The Bible uses debt as a picture of sin. The more we sin the more debts we pile up, and we cannot pay them off. The only thing we can do is to pray, “Forgive us our debts.” The amazing thing about God is that he does indeed forgive our sins and make us debt free. What has paid the price is the blood of Jesus.
Dear Jesus, please forgive my sins so that I can go through life debt free. Thank you. Amen.
