A Secret Prayer

Steven Laman

READ : Matthew 6:1-8

When you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. (v. 6 NIV)

Drying off after showering, my mind replayed scenes from the Communication Aid Manufacturers Association conference. A representative of one of the companies told me about someone who uses his speech device to give motivational speeches. Half wondering, I prayed, “Lord, if you allow me to get a new device, maybe I can use it like he does.” Since getting a new “talker,” God has given me the opportunity to speak publicly in several places. I had completely forgotten about that prayer until Dad asked me to join him at the pulpit to give most of the message on a Sunday morning.

Jesus told us to pray in secret places. There are times for public prayers, but he also desires for us to communicate with him personally. In those times we can be more honest, not tempted to show off, and talk with him on a deeper level. When we nurture that relationship, God will bring wonderful rewards.

Do you have a secret prayer life? If we keep talking to the Lord one on one, no telling what he will do in our lives. He promises to listen whenever and wherever we speak—even in the shower!

Thank you for the gift of secret prayer.
