READ : John 14:15-20
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever. (v. 16 NIV)
She had only seen me with my parents. This sixth grader knew that I need lots of help. When she saw me crossing the street independently in my wheelchair, she inquired, “Where is your helper? Don’t you need your helper with you?” I just smiled, shook my head, and continued on my way.
Even though I do not need someone physically with me every minute, her words reminded me how fortunate I am to have another helper who is constantly with me. At the end of his earthly ministry, Jesus promised all who followed him that his Spirit would be with them forever. The Holy Spirit lives within everyone who confesses Jesus as Lord. When we listen to his advice, he helps us to make God-glorifying decisions, to know who and what to pray for, and prompts us to use our gifts and talents to serve others in his name.
It seemed odd to this girl to see me “walking” by myself. It should seem just as strange to see believers walking through this life without “keeping in step with the Spirit” (cf. Galatians 5:25). He is always there for us.
Thank you, Father, for the gift of the Holy Spirit. Help us to follow him wherever he leads.
