Come with Me

READ : Mark 6:30-32

“Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while.” (v. 31)

The disciples return to Jesus from a time of ministry, excited but exhausted. Jesus beckons “come away . . . and get some rest.”

What would you do today if you were responsible for absolutely nothing—no homework to be done, no job deadlines to meet, no expectations?

For three months that was my privilege. The congregation I serve received a Clergy Renewal Grant. I was free from all responsibilities and expectations—no night-time phone calls, no sermons to write, no meetings to lead—absolutely nothing. I was free to go away with Jesus and rediscover God’s love for me and my calling as God’s child.

And so I went. I went to quiet places of retreat with Jesus. I went with Jesus to Africa, to Bahrain, and to Japan. I saw his beauty in his creation, in his creatures, and in his church. He opened my eyes to see what he is doing and to enjoy his company. In the coming days, I’ll take you to some of those places.

We can’t always take three months to get away, but we can take time each day to be alone with Jesus. What a gift—the Savior of the world invites you to go to a quiet place with him.

Precious Savior, thank you for inviting us to spend time alone with you.
