Joy from the Single Goal of Honoring Christ

Christ will be exalted now as always in my body, whether by life or by death. (v. 20)

The Major League Baseball logo flashed on the TV screen. The slogan stated, “I live for this!” My mind went back to a small, dusty lean-to shack on a New Mexico Indian reservation. My wife and I were making a pastoral visitation during my seminary summer assignment. A voice from the interior called out, “Come on in.” As our eyes adjusted from the bright sun to the dim room, we took in the view before us. There he was, flat on his back on a small cot, with no one attending him. He passed every day this way because of a crippling back injury.

From that unlikely posture, he drew pictures. He especially loved to draw Appaloosa horses. Our grandson has one of those pictures on his wall today. The picture’s caption reads, “Appaloosa has the speed to get them.” This faithful and uncomplaining servant of Christ loved horses the way many people love baseball. But he didn’t live for horses. He lived for Christ. His testimony was, “If this is the will of God for my life it’s OK. I will honor Christ by drawing my best pictures every day.”

How will you honor Christ today?

Lord, show me ways to honor you in my everyday life, starting today.
