Joy from Making Progress in the Christian Faith

Only, live your life in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. (v. 27)

I first met him when he was a college student. The young man was like an anchorless, drifting boat. He was living with a girlfriend and was doing drugs. He told me later he hesitated taking a seat at my table because a book I had with me included the name of God in the title. But since he was hungry for lunch he took a chance. We got acquainted. We took walks and talked, and walked and talked some more. He learned to trust me, and eventually, to trust Christ as his Savior.

Progress followed. Change came bit by bit. Drugs went. The live-in girlfriend went. Campus worship and new Christian friends entered his life. Then came graduation and a job. At a nearby church he soon became a deacon and did calling in the community. He married a Christian girl and started a family.

Later, in obedience to Christ’s calling, he and his family moved into the inner-city of a large Eastern U.S. metropolis. Again, he became a leader in his congregation. Today he and his wife are living lives worthy of the gospel and raising their two boys to walk with Christ. What joy!

Lord, help me progress today in a way worthy of your name and love. Amen.
