The Lord is near. (Philippians 4:5)
How can you be ready for the Lord’s appearing?
No frenzy, no running to the hill tops: just live a clear-headed, self-controlled,
prayer-filled, people-serving, God-loving life. It’s the way to be prepared for whenever
Christ returns. A friend of mine named Les lived that way.
Les was a milkman by occupation (at a time when the milkman came and left glass bottles
of milk on your doorstep). But his preoccupation was with living every day as a Christian.
He was honest, a faithful husband, a diligent father to three growing sons, and blessed
with good humor.
Though his feet were firmly planted on the ground, his heart belonged to heaven. He
loved to talk theology.
Struck by cancer at much too early an age, family and friends gathered around his
bedside on his final night. Seeing all their sad faces, Les said, “Why is everyone so sad?
Let’s sing.” And that’s how he left this world, singing songs of faith with family and
friends, rejoicing in the Lord to the end.
Les was an ordinary person but he was extraordinary in the way he lived, and died, such
a prepared life. It helps to have a model. Do you have one? Can you be one?
Lord, whether you come for me or I go to you, help me live a ready life.
