READ : Philippians 4:11-14
I can do all things through him who strengthens me. (v. 13)
The emphasis here is not on “all things” but on the Christ who gives us strength. He is our power source in all situations.
I called on Minnie the day she moved into the nursing home. I was concerned she would be terribly disappointed and find the adjustment difficult after living in her own home almost all of her life. Instead, she pleasantly and firmly said, “Yes, this is where I am now and this is where I’m going to be. This will be my home now.”
I know the secret of Minnie’s strength. She showed the same spirit as when earlier she had ended up in the hospital on the day she had anticipated an open house to celebrate her 95th birthday. She took it in stride and with good humor. In her hospital room, I found her tatting (a craft similar to knitting). She commented, “I’ve been doing this since I was nine years old—but I still make mistakes.” Then, with a warm smile, she added, “That’s what gets your goat—that is, if you have a goat to get!”
None of us knows what a day may bring. But we may know the One who gives us strength to meet the challenge. Will you rely on Christ today?
Lord, be my strength in whatever challenges I meet today.
