READ : Genesis 39
But the Lord was with Joseph and showed him steadfast love. (v. 21)
Sometime between beginning and end, Joseph’s journey detours into the home of Potiphar. The detour begins with, “The Lord was with Joseph, and he became a successful man”; employment promotions, job prestige, and positions of power. Joseph was faithful in his work for Potiphar.
He tried hard to avoid the tempting realities of his own flesh in the presence of a beautiful woman. Despite Joseph’s moral integrity, the lust and deceit of Potiphar’s wife prompted Joseph’s imprisonment. No more promotions, certainly no prestige, and complete powerlessness.
But just as the slamming sound of Joseph’s prison door echoed in his heart and mind, we read, “But the Lord was with Joseph and showed him steadfast love.” Interesting, isn’t it? The circumstances of Joseph’s life were not the sole evidence of God’s presence. God was present with Joseph in the midst of his success, and God was present with Joseph in the midst of his pain.
God is with us too. If work and life are going well, be assured God is present with you. If the difficult realities of life and faith are overwhelming you, be assured God is still present with you. Our circumstances are not the sole evidence of God’s presence and steadfast love.
Father, thank you for your abiding presence in our lives. Amen.
