READ : John 13:34-35
“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another.” (v. 34)
The song Amazing Love by Chris Tomlin speaks of the depth and passion of God’s heart for us. That a king who is without blemish would die for sinners is a truth that saves those who believe. But there is a problem if we see our faith as merely the exercise of nurturing our vertical relationship with God, paying little attention to the relationships we have with each other.
Jesus was clear; you cannot separate the relationship you have with God from the relationships you have with other Christians. If either is out of balance, the other will inevitably suffer. Christ’s new commandment is to replicate the love God has demonstrated to us in the lives of others. For the next couple of weeks, we’ll be going deeper to look at the nature of this love. The Scriptures will challenge us to develop practical love for one another, and they will equip us with specific ways of obeying this new commandment of Jesus.
Ultimately, God gets glory as his people model Christ’s love to each other. Churches become centers of encouragement and witness to our world, a world that is dying to find a place where love is authentic.
Lord, help me grow in love for others. Amen.
