READ : Galatians 5:13-15
Do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence, but through love become slaves to one another. (v. 13)
The call came just as I had put my feet up after a long night of work at our church’s outreach ministry. Someone had set off the alarm at the church, and the alarm company called to have it checked out before the police arrived. It turns out that while the church staff was closing up the building, a young man from our choir decided to clean the bathroom without telling anyone.
You can imagine his shock when he came out of the bathroom and heard the blaring siren! While his act of service caused some inconvenience, it was a blessing to see someone go the extra mile in being a servant.
It is essential that we serve one another. Whether the context is marriage, the church, friendships, or family, we must “go the extra mile” to meet the needs of others. In doing so, we demonstrate a commitment to them and express what they mean to us.
Jesus showed this by washing his disciples’ feet. By performing this menial task he showed us that if we are truly his disciples, we will practice the same kind of humble service in our lives.
God, help me to be a servant in all areas of my life. Amen.
