Honoring Others

Outdo one another in showing honor. (v. 10)

In a recent college softball game, a player injured her knee after hitting a home run. She collapsed near first base and couldn’t make it any farther. By rule, she would not be allowed the home run if she couldn’t go around the bases, and her teammates weren’t allowed to help. Then two players from the other team approached her, lifted her up, and carried her around the bases so she could score. For a moment the game turned into a competition to “outdo one another in showing honor.”

The “me first” attitude prevails in our society. God’s Word teaches us that “you first” is the way to go. Laying aside our rights and privileges for one another reflects maturity and demonstrates God’s love. This was the model Jesus gave us when he laid down his life for us, offering himself as a sacrifice so that we might have abundant life today and eternal life in the future.

Consider how you can honor others in your life. How can you put their needs and wants above your own? What ambitions and desires could you lay aside to help someone else reach their goals? If you try that you will find a bounty of blessing, and the satisfaction of enriching another life.

Heavenly Father, help me outdo others in showing honor. Amen.
