Unexpected Help

READ : Joshua 2:1-7

So they went and entered the house of a prostitute named Rahab and stayed there. (v. 1 NIV)

I remember years ago one of my professors saying that God is a God of surprises. God does amazing things we would never expect to happen, and he sometimes uses totally unexpected people to do them. When the Israelite spies went to Jericho, God even used a prostitute to accomplish his purpose!

One day a woman got a phone call telling her that her daughter was sick. Immediately she left to attend the girl. On the way home she decided to stop at the pharmacy. In her haste, she locked her keys in her car. “O Lord,” she prayed, “please send me someone who can help me.” Soon after, an old car pulled up with a scruffy-looking man inside. “This is who you sent me, Lord?” she wondered. But the man was very kind and opened the door easily. “Thank you, sir. You are such a nice man.”

“Some people don’t think I’m so nice,” he replied. “I just got out of prison. I was serving time for car theft.” How about that – God had sent her a professional!

God doesn’t always give us what we expect. But he does give us what we need. And sometimes his help comes from unexpected sources.

Thank you, God, for your surprising ways of helping us. Amen.
