The Faith of Rahab

John Koedyker

READ : Joshua 2:8-24
Hebrews 11:31

By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient. (Hebrews 11:31 NIV)

This Canaanite prostitute Rahab was really something! Not only did she hide the Israelite spies on her rooftop, but she did that because of her faith. At least that is how the writer of Hebrews puts it. “By faith . . . Rahab . . . welcomed the spies.”

Rahab told the spies that it was common knowledge that God was with the people of Israel. When she and her fellow citizens of Jericho heard about God’s mighty acts in Egypt, she said, “our hearts melted and everyone’s courage failed” (Joshua 2:11 NIV).

It is interesting to note that the people of Jericho knew the facts about the true God. But they lacked one thing – faith. They knew what God had done, but they did not turn to him. Rahab was different. She heard, she believed, and she acted on her belief. And the result was that she was saved from destruction.

How many people in our world know about God, or even know the Bible. But they lack faith. It is not enough to acknowledge that the Bible is an interesting book. The important thing is: Do you believe it? Do you believe in the God who sent his Son to save you?

Lord, help me to believe and act on my belief. Amen.
