Unbelievable but True

John Koedyker

READ : Joshua 10:1-15

There has never been a day like it before or since, a day when the Lord listened to a man. (v. 14 NIV)

Ripley’s Believe It or Not was an extremely popular book when I was in elementary school. It was so fascinating! It had pictures and stories about things like a dog who likes to skateboard, a woman who has wires growing out of her stomach, or a seventeen-year-old boy who could lift a car off the ground. All these strange happenings seemed unbelievable. Yet they claimed to be true.

Today’s reading has a bit of the same feel to it. God stops the sun in the sky for one man! It sounds unbelievable, doesn’t it? The writer of Joshua believed it, though. He reports that never had there been a day like that before.

Another seemingly unbelievable thing happened on the cross. One man died so that all could be saved from sins and given eternal life (Romans 5:18-19). But the truth is, if there had only been a single sinner, and that sinner were you, Christ would still have died for you. By stopping the sun God showed his great power. By sending his Son Jesus, God showed his great love. The word for that isn’t “unbelievable.” It’s grace.

Thank you, Lord, for your unbelievable grace to me in Jesus Christ. Amen.
